  1. For a sec I read BEGUN as BEGUM after the NAWAB ans.

Why is the Sumo wrestler wearing a hat and mask like the spy?

    1. Didn't read Kishore's comment re: BEGU N/ M. As always, ever alert is he, seen also in his opening remark.

    2. Raghu, I do not know if you have seen Antonio Prohias' Spy Vs Spy cartoon strip in Mad magazine. The pointed nose, circular eyes and the hat come from that. The strip basically is the saga of two spies (one white and one black) trying to outwit each other.

You can see more of that at :

  3. 31A- You have nevertheless said what you wanted to say. Nice way of putting it!
4D- I put it as 'saheb' in stead of nawab, being guided by governor.

The idea came to me after I read a Comment of yours some days ago and was quickly executed. Just for fun!

    2. This may be in self-congratulation but I executed the idea to a certain idiomatic expression.

  6. THE DAILY DUPE
    =============

    HAPPINESS IN
    ANDHRA PRADESH

    HYDERABAD, Apr 21
    There were celebrations
    in parts of Andhra Pradesh
by people holding up a certain
    newspaper and pen in their
    hands.
    Curious bystanders approached
them and asked them what the
    reason was for their merriment.
In the crossword there is no T-word,
they cried and hurrahed for an
    undivided State.
It is rumoured that the crossword
    setter has been approached by
    moneybags to pepper a future
grid with Ts but he is teetering
    in hesitation. - FOC

  12. 4D, With just the opening N and the ending B available, I entered NABOB, without even looking at the clue, and later justified it using Bo Derek as an example. As a result I couldn't get FLY_ _ _ B _. :(
