      EX: prep, commerce 1 direct from somewhere • ex warehouse. 2 excluding something • ex VAT.

      ETYMOLOGY: 19c: Latin, meaning 'out of'.

  2. 5 Creature has a short month to work (7) OCTOPUS {OCT}{OPUS}

    Have a doubt about 'to' before "work"? OPUS is a noun and not a verb, so does 'to' work here? (pardon the pun)

    4. No need for any apologies.
      We would ignore any typos - I too am prone to it.
      My rejoinder was indulging in wordplay.
      When I wrote my response, I had the term 'twerking' in my mind and our friend Kishore was quick to retort.
      So the arrow that I shot fell to earth exactly where I intended it to fall!

  5. SELF RESPECT was very good.

    18a, isn't TAKE APART the dictionary phrase and TAKE A PART wordplay?

    2. 18a - What Bhavan means is that 'Dismantle' must be in bold ital as that is the def for phrase required.

    3. Since the enu is 4,1,4, dismantle (Take Apart- 4,5) cannot be the def. Am I right?

      Delete
    4. Yes, you are. My prev post was done thoughtlessly. As per the enu, the def is indicated properly inthe blog .
      I am not sure now if the clue is all right - if def, wordplay and enu all gel.

  11. Bingo! Could complete the puzzle at last. It was a bit tough going in South-West corner but did not give up. Had trouble annotating ABUTTAL and EXILE. Thank you Gridman for an enjoyable crossy.

      I agree the clue is vague. Sometimes we may not have a better chice for a slot. Sometimes we may leave a light w/o working too much on it. Besides, the phrase itself is not a familiar one.

    2. 22A : As for me, it was a toss up btn Lane and Long and I went for Lane and it clicked!

  17. 18 Dismantle — or join the cast? (4,1,4) TAKE A PART {TAKE} {A PART}

    How can we classify this clue? A Semi DD?!

  18. Agree with Bhavan, 28A flows beautifully, although can anything be 'less' perfect? I realise that 'less than perfect' would have made the clue -- you guessed it -- less than perfect, but I'm simply wondering about the usage of the phrase.
