No 10958, Tuesday 17 Dec 2013, Afterdark

The HINDU has decided to give AFTERDARK a foreign sounding name? The CW today is attributed to 'AFLER DERRK' ! Maybe, as he is showing us so many foreign movies today, had to google a lot to get them as I had not heard of most of them.

    1. Thanks. Never thought of that synonym of 'release', the definition in the middle didn't help also.

  2. Knock! Knock! Anybody home?

No comments up to now? 'Movie' and 'film' appear so many times in the clues. Added to that, French, Greek, Spanish.... phew!

Got only a few like SIESTA, FISH TANK, BOSS, ETHER AND HEAT and gave up to attend to other work.

  3. The opening clue 1 Across sounded yucky enough. How does 'vomited' work in the place of 'omitted'? Who threw up this one, the setter or the typesetter? :-)

  4. Like Afterdark's choice of movies. Like Amelie the best.

  5. OK, there are 17 movies in this puzzle, but luckily many of them titled normally hence other definition could be provided. For some it was straight forward film/movie indication.

  6. A couple of difficult movie names to get, esp. CARRIE, DISTURBIA. The notorious 'long list' rears it's head again?

    1. A couple of difficult movies to watch too. Carrie's a popular horror movie from the 70s and Disturbia is based on Hitchcock's Rear Window. A spine-chilling thriller.

    2. Or a spine-thrilling chiller!

  7. Movies are shown after dark. No wonder we are in the dark about some movies!

I read Richard's comment@9.46 with Col.'s opening remark about Afterdark going foreign!

    Setter/ setter's leads to I / me- how is it normally? 22A- Me, 24A-I .
    16d- 'pI' from?
Enjoyed the way Robin was Cooked with a capital C. Shuchi had an article recently on fa;se capitalisation. This time it leads everyone (or is it just me?) think about Robin Cook, the author.

    2. How good is 'good' equal to Pi ? If you could throw some more light on that please !

    3. Pious= good .The explanation given by Shuchi some days back ,when I asked her the same question :)

    4. Thank you, LV.

So I presume PI is taken as abridged form of Pious.

    5. Nice (cine*) puzzle Shrikanth.

With verbal anagram indicators like Cook (6d), the indicator needs to precede the anagram fodder so that it serves as an instuction to the solver. If the anagram indicator follows the fodder, then it needs to be either a gerund form of the verb (cooking) or an adjective or past tense of the verb (cooked).

  8. Richard,
I thought so too about the link. But looking around I clicked on the subheading ... I see that you have got it too in the meantime.
Good time to wish them all (and more particularly our bloggers) the Best of Luck in the finals.

OK, there are 17 movies in this puzzle.

And my take on them :

Across : 9 Cars, 10 Whale Rider, 12 City Hall, 15 Boss, 16 Once, 17 Disturbia, 21 Fish Tank, 22 Amelie, 24 Girl Friend (Hindi) and 25 (The) Heat (Total 10)

    Down : 1 Amadeus, 2 (The) Taste, 3 Raw Deal, 5 Siesta, 6 Neighbour, 8 Matchstick Men and 20 Carrie (Total 7)

I was unsuccessful in completing the puzzle. In fact, could hardly reach halfway mark ! But hope, I've succeeded in unearthing those 17 movies, AD was talking about !!

    1. You can add Red eye to the list

    2. You're right, Ramesh ! In that case, one of the movies I mentioned above, must be wrong ! Only AD can point it out, I believe.

    3. Good thing with the list is that it doesn't have any obscure movie titles.

That being said, I don't think there's any popular movie called Boss or Taste. So prolly either of 'em's not part of the list.

    4. Boss is a Hindi Movie. Akshay Kumar in the lead. Taste was not in my list , though there is a TV Movie called Taste .

  11. Most of the movies I was in dark.Only after dark they (names of the movies) came to light. Of course we could crack some by contextual meaning. Nice cw in general.
