DeleteI think many were watching today's cricket test, which was quite expectedly coming to an end today.
ReplyDeleteI watched it at the end, much after India won, solely for the sake of the farewell to Sachin Tendulkar. It was very emotional all through. His farewell speech was so touching.
Although I have said in the past that he should have gracefully retired much earlier to make way for another deserving youngster, I will always remain his admirer.
Guess many from this forum have watched it.
Sure, I watched it till the end! What a touching speech - at the end of a superb career. Salaam Sachin, once again.

Anyway, the complaint of sportsmen of all other disciplines is that cricket always takes the cake.Consider, for example, that Anand is 5 times world champion in chess, where there have been very few outside erstwhile USSR.

DeleteBesides, these things can create heartburn. Mike Ferreira who was the amateur World Billiards champion a few times and set some records, was chosen for Padma Shri in 1981. He declined it saying that Sunil Gavaskar was given Padma Bhushan, a decoration higher in rank.
Persons like Dhyan Chand and Milkha Singh were recognized very late in life.

ReplyDeleteNot that I am not a Sachin fan. No lover of cricket would do that. But like you said, some of the examples are staring at us, esp. this being a team sport. And look at the speed with which it is done.
For what they've achieved in their respective fields, people like Leander Paes and Vishwanathan Anand are no less. In fact I'd rate them a little higher 'cause they've excelled in sports with greater international appeal. Well, this coming from someone who's not a big fan of cricket might make it sound a little biased, but the fact is, cricket is still a game that's played hardly among 7-8 nations. And of all the countries, India is prolly the only one that takes the game this seriously.
ReplyDeleteAnd it really annoyed me when some joker in the press asked Anand about Tendulkar's retirement. It was really a very inappropriate question considering the mood Anand was in after his loss.
Congrats to Shuchi for winning Round 6 of IXL . On wards to victory for the others in our Blogroup who are nearing to breast the tape. Methinks, One of ye-bloggers will walk off with the trophy at the finals, which could be held in Namma Bengaluru ?
