  1. It seems that most southern centres - if not all - centres of the paper are closed today and there will therefore be no paper tomorrow. Yes, the web edition will be there but will they include the crossword?

  2. To answer Raju's query yesterday -

THC has had three lady setters since its inception. Of these, two contributed puzzles over several years. I can't disclose their names as they are not in the public domain. I had much respect for the work of one of them. The other's work was average or less than that. The third entered the THC scene with a name entailing other colleagues to search for pseudonyms.

    1. Which doesn't actually answer his question. How can I say why there is no lady setter on THC panel? No bars are there; actually the paper is all for gender equality as can be gauged from the contents and editorial stances now and then.

I have invited anyone to send a sample to me for possible empanelment (subject to vacancies and subject to decision by quarters concerned) and doesn't that include women?

    3. While agreeing with the above incremental advocacies, my own opinion is that every successful solver may not really want to go to the other side of this two-person game.

But every setter would have been a successful solver.

Does a setter into the field for many, many years lose his solving skill? Maybe!

    4. Why if anything I think women can do it better. There must be many potential setters lurking around.

Though I don't solve, I often go through clues that appear on Guardian cryptics. One setter that's really impressed me the most is Sarah Hayes who goes by Arachne. Brilliant she is!

  4. Phailin is fading but only after felling trees, electrical poles etc.

All comparisons to 1999 cyclone are ludicrous. In 1999, not only was the cyclone stronger. It lingered over Paradip for nearly two days before moving on and there were no communications whasoever
