  2. Since Monday is a holiday on account of Ganesh Chathurthi, I will not be posting a special at 10:30 tomorrow, instead I will post it at 10:30 AM on Monday, 09 Sep.

    1. I think the paper will not be there on Tuesday. So maybe Tuesday is better.

    2. Last year there was a paper. Anyhow will see what happens on Monday

    3. One humble suggestion for Sunday special xword - as new members are also participating in this ,why not reduce three answers per commenter to 2.

    4. Lakshmi,

Why do you want a reduction? With 2 answers we may not get sufficient entries to complete the CW.

    5. My suggestion. Why not allow only 2 answers for veteran CW solvers ? In case of non response from new solvers, the Pros can re-enter the field after the deadline and complete the quota of 3 answers.

    6. I thought it will give a chance to every one. Nothing else :)

    7. That would be a difficult classification

    8. Is there anyone around who did not get a chance to post answers on the Sunday specials? If so please comment so that I could consider reduction to 2 answers per commenter.

  3. 5A : I took 'amen' for 'the last word' and was beating around the bush for sometime ! In Banking terminology RIP is not 'Rest in Peace' but
    Re-Investment Plan (Deposit Account) !!

  4. 24 A - Is it a typo'? Should the word FIGHT s has to be FLIGHT? Or it is correct?

    1. I too feel it is a typo but can't vouch for it ! My knowledge is limited you see :)

  5. It should be "flight". Typo at the printers'.

  6. Col. Sir,
In Andhra and Tamilnadu Ganesh Puja is celebrated on Monday. So there will be no edition on Tuesday. If the "Special CW" is posted on Tuesday
(a working day), most of the Sunday(Holiday) bloggers like Sreelakshmi,C.A.Prasad,Vikram,Jayaseelan,Sebu et al will be missing (the fun) and completion of the CW will be doubtful for want of sufficient entries. So why not have the "Special" as usual tomorrow and one more on Tuesday
with four answers per commenter ! Am I sounding too greedy Sir ? :)

  7. 24A- 'The men in fight' could refer to Air Force, in which case there is no typo.

If I remember right, there have been CW's in on-line editions on such holidays. That is why Col. says let us wait & watch. Maybe, he is running short of puzzles. Contributors, pl. note!

  8. Another masterpiece from Sankalak. How does one classify him as a compiler? Old School? Simple and dignified and decent? Incisive and instructive?

SPUR OF THE MOMENT and DIVERSFICATION are the clues of my day.

ON Specials, Deepak, why restrict the entries? solutions? why not free for all? Let them be like the usual ones with results published, since in any case, there is no prize for any fastest thinker or finger. We all tinker with the clues and hence there is no justification in classifying any one as a veteran or a newbie. At times, a simplest clue becomes evasive for a seasoned solver whereas the freshman hit's the bull's eye right away !

Has any shrink ever analysed what makes cryptic solvers so compulsive and hence addictive?
Why is it still termed as a hobby or a pastime , unlike chess or other mind games that get universal recognition ? Are we an esoteric lot?

  9. Kishore: Kishore:

Tautology is never taught ! Nor are Oxymorons for Oxford-educated morons !! Are those cops lined up with rifles or stun-guns on a bandh day?

Today's cartoon is very geometrical and reminds me of the Avenues here in New York. So well-planned on an architect's drawing board.

Shop-bought ? CV? another Indianization of the language?

Jayaraman's comment was not there when I put in my entry. I just hazarded a guess.
