    Thanks. I found a link (http://www.puzzletome.com/crossword/tutorial.php ) that gives a list of abbreviations used by setters.

    It was a pleasure solving Arden's latest.

    I needed 17D to take on the tough,though pleasant,task of solving the next raising the bar edition of Arden CW. Enjoying it immensely though I could not complete- "takes years of practice" as Col. put it and I probably have a few more to go!

    Taking away I(nterest), makes it MISTR[-i]AL (Defn: blowing wind)

    Like Sankalak's puzzles, Arden's are pure magic with difficulty level a bit high.

    ...at either end would have sounded better, perhaps. Did I hear someone exclaim 'Nazi!'?

    Finally getting the measure of the man! The wordplay and surfaces are neat.

    @Richard 1:12 -- I think many a time we feel we could tweak the clue to read just a shade better, so I know what you mean. For eg, when doing 18A I thought 'container' instead of 'drum' would have made for a better surface, not that there's anything wrong with the clue
