  2. On the occassion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Goa, a snippet from the Time magazine of 1961:

    "India's Jawaharlal Nehru is like a man who is simultaneously being trampled by an elephant and needled by a mosquito—and goes for the mosquito. While doing his best to ignore Communist China's latest incursions in a vast (50,000 sq. mi.), disputed area of northeastern India, Nehru declared recently that Portugal's lush, Rhode Island-sized colony of Goa on India's west coast was becoming increasingly "intolerable"."

    The elephant could not be trampled and continues trampling. The mosquito has metamorphosis-ed.

  3. spot = ounce, a little bit

    spot in the sense of a little bit has been used in:
    'tea with a spot of milk' both in PGW books and in Asterix in Britain.

  4. This is more like it from Gridman. Best of the offerings so far this run. Except for a couple of oversights (the 's in 5A and the missing E or A in 12A) this is a good puzzle.

    ... GESTAPO (~jest?){GEST}{A}

    yes, as a standalone word gest is pronounced like jest (but not as part of the word gestapo)

    ... {OYST{E}R*} {BED<-} 'bluepoint' or 'Blue Point' ?

    Both are acceptable and synonyms according to WordWeb

  6. Yes, made one stretch a little bit extra.
    4D-beginner coming back-deb? debut derives from this?
    Kishore@08.38- Because it was coming after pilsner,lager was confused?

  7. deb is short for debutante, a beginner, which comes from the same route at debut.
