    Released - FREED
    {FREE(W)(OR)(L)D}

  2. Thanks SR, for some reason I was equating released to free and not freed.

  3. 'L' for inductance may also be difficult to some.I could not use it here in spite of being in the electrical line and knowing well about it,probably because I did not get 'freed'.

    On the whole,I found it a little tough with a few new words,but enjoyable after knowing the solution.

    No guesses for the theme?

  5. Bhavan,

    Thanks a lot for standing in for me.

    Back after a long drive to the airport and back followed by a trip to the RTO's office to get my b-i-l's driving licence renewed. Lot of new rules at the RTO office nowadays, only Govt Doc can sign med cert, so had to go hunting for one and now the renewed licence will be sent by post only, one cannot collect it by hand. The local docs and touts must be cursing.

  8. 12D Nasopharynx
    Looks like a simple/straight/'E'clue.
    There is nothing cryptic about it.

  9. My COD is 6D CHEERLEADER (d&cd) where, as Bhavan pointed out, the solution and second part result in the same letter CHEERLEADER = C = first century.

  10. L for inductance: The symbol L for inductance was chosen to honor Heinrich Lenz, whose pioneering work in electromagnetic induction led to the development of the final theory.

    However, it is questionable whether this is an accepted Crossword abbreviation (like R for resistance).

  11. Colonel @12:36 No problem.

    Navneeth @15:21 let's say to signify the once in a blue moon posts from me : )

    SR @21.16 : It is an accepted abbreviation - at least in Chambers XWD dictionary.
