  1. Yikes. Some of the setters/clues are taking all fun out of solving the puzzle each morning.

If any newspaper republishes a crossword from another publication by arrangement with the latter, there will always be a timelag so that the original crossword does not lose its clientele.

In some cases, the original crossword might be a prize crossword having a deadline for entries and prize award, so simultaneous publication just cannot happen.

In other cases, the online edition of the original paper may be a paid-for service whereas the paper that reproduces it may be offering the same crossword free. It makes sense that there is some passage of time between the two outings.

The reputed NYT is syndicated across the USA and I might tell you that the time lag is some six weeks.

The Times crossword that is reproduced by HT of India is some several years (yes, years) old.

  4. I can understand why Bhavan put in that first word in his Comment above - what's it called? Interjection? Ejaculation? Imprecation?

    Let's take

Made mistakes and ran for it (7) ERRANDS

    This clue bristles with problems.

Even assuming that 'mistakes' is the def, taking 'made' as a pointer to the solver having made it at the end of his efforts, the rest of the clue 'ran for it' is problematic. For, 'it' can lead only to the singular 'errand' and not its plural form.

Maybe those Standard IX or XII students who get 100 per cent in their English exam should start composing crosswords. Those with 99 per cent won't do.

  5. Thanks CV for the explanation.

  6. SHEPHERDESS is a good one; and the clue, though simple, is a challenging one. HT Cryptic had a similar word sometime back - POSTMISTRESS.

Her song Bebdo used to be my ringtone for ages.
