  2. 23 - One who throws out a kind of seat (7) - EJECTOR [DD] Isn't that an 'ejection seat'?.

Ejector seat. ejection seat. Both are correct. Like a friend of mine would say ' Same thing yaar'

2 - Tried to dispose of bicycle by speaking to dealer at first (7) - (~pedal){PEDDLE}{D} 'of' or 'off'?

'Dispose of' is the correct usage. what is the question?

  3. Thanks Suresh,
somehow I always thought it was dispose off

  4. 2D 'Dispose of', in this case, means 'get rid of'. This is the correct usage. Alternately, we can say, 'Sell off'.

'Dispose of' may also be used when we mean 'deal with' or 'settle' as in "She disposed of the cases quickly".

What I am wondering is at the absence of article 'a' or 'the' before bicycle.

  5. 26 - Entertains US detectives leaving station house (6) - AMUSES Anno pending
    US detectives SHAMUSES
    leaving Station House [-SH]
    Defn: entertains [-sh]AMUSES

  6. Tried to dispose of bicycle by speaking...

    -

Here 'tried to dispose of' is the def as indicated by the blogger.

'bicycle', v., gives 'pedal', hom. of 'peddle'.

The introduction of 'a' or 'the' would make 'bicycle' a noun - which WON'T give the hom.

    Convinced?

  7. I'd rate this crossword as Good and moderately hard. And it is welcome.

I think slightly tougher puzzles make up for easier offerings elsewhere.

Having said that, 9A and 10A sharing ORDER was a little jarring.

I also didn't get cricket batsman's punishment part in 16. Hit for punishment may be, but the rest?

  8. The Batsman punished the bowler by hitting him for a six.

  9. 9A and 10A sharing ORDER was a little jarring.

    --

Perhaps. But even on the prev. day of checking I did not see why it should be changed it as in each case the word ORDER comes from a different route (command, community of nouns). If in each case the same def was used, it would have been definitely jarring.

    Exactly!

If a batsman just nudges a ball and takes a quick single, he's not punishing the bowler. OTOH, if the ball is lofted and it goes into the crowd fetching six runs, the bowler surely meets with punishment. You must see the bowler's face when this happens, how miserable he is!

  11. Decent CW with workmanlike clues. The 'aha' (or LOL) moment which one generally expects from a good Crossie is provided by Deepak's embellishments. I liked the joke that accompanied 'tip-offs'(1a)

  12. CV @ 11.20 Let's just put it down to my idiosyncrasy rather than something being wrong in the clue/solution.

Col/CV thanks for the sixer explanation.

Downloaded Firefox 5 today (technically yesterday), the en-GB version, and Chambers (UK) Free English Dictionary is offered as search engine by default! I hadn't seen it before, perhaps because I was using en-US for a long time. This version of the dictionary is not as detailed as the real thing for obvious reasons, but I thought it a nice touch.
