  1. "Peurto Rican teen named Mistress of the universe."

    OMG... LOL!! That's really hilarious.

What kinda clue is 2D? What's the anagram indicator for RIOT?

I thought NEGATION was the best.

  2. And enter afresh = RE-ENTER. Don't know what to call it.

  6. The apprentice of the universe ! Rashtrapati can be translated into something like that.

I think 26a is meant to be E type.

  7. Deepak, as mentioned last week I am deeply involved at present with kids.

By the way that rr post above was mine.

  8. Deepak 0849: Our early birds Kishore & Richard didn't seem to find their worms today?

Apparently they are opening a can of it somewhere else!

  9. Cutting and pasting a response to a couple of posts yesterday:

@ Navneeth 22:27 - I believe NO => zero as in the letter 'O' + 'INTERN' giving INTONER.

@ Mathu 10:29 - Not having as much time at my disposal. So I peep in late in the evening, when others have usually finished looking into the day's blog. :(

  11. Hi Deepak and Chaturvasi

Thanks for remembering me. I am very much alive and kicking ! Just occupied with some important assignments.

How about opening cans of another kind at S&B II?

26 - Express amusement by explosive inarticulate sounds (8) - LAUGHTER ? Anno pending

The only anno I can find: It may be a tribute to Archana Puransingh who is a judge in the stand-up show 'Comedy Circus' on Sony TV channel. :)

  12. Deepak & CV: Not cans, but mebbe an early bird picked us up.

The alias was an error. My brother was logged in and his name appeared.

  13. @ Col: OMG! I don't know where u dug up the article for "MISTRESS"!! Too funny!! :)

Another Jekyll and Hyde offering from Manna. :)

    Question:
23A: How is "in writing" = 'MS'? I first thought "instructor's" = "M"aster'"S". Hence, anagram of MS + SISTER, but that would mean the defn. is "in writing" ...

    9D: How does "pledge"="EARNEST"?

    ReplyDelete
  14. - 26A cannot be straight def..only "LAUGH" will fit the verb suggestion..

    - 2D was self-riotous !?!

    - When girl is unimportant in MISSES

    - 8D..spent quite some time thinking of derivatives of "defence" as there was "fenced off*" :-) Among the better ones today.

    - 15A - DIESEL ..had a missing article. Given the clue was about "conking out", it may be said it had a missing obituary.

    - RE-ENTERS, TERRORS & Others ... hmm..

    @Hari..
    23A : MS = manuscript.
9D: Earnest also means mortgage/pledge as in earnest value, earnest money etc.

AIR FORCE, NEGATION, GROCER, DRAMAS were really nice.

    Weird:
26A: LAUGHTER - Wouldn't it be better to clue it as "Amusement expressed by.." At least this way, the defn and answer are both nouns...
28A: TERRORS - I didn't know "terrors" could be a verb? I always said "terrorizes". Assuming it's an E type clue?

  16. @ Prasanna 9:21 - Thx! That clears it up. :)
And... I understand what u mean about missing the "a", but isn't it fairly common to use just "French" while denoting "le/de/etc"?

Oh, and in my list of weird annos, I excluded the obvious ones pointed out earlier - EDITOR, RE-ENTER.

  17. Disastrous crossword today. Terrible clues. Best forgotten.

  18. >>>>isn't it fairly common to use just "French" while denoting "le/de/etc"?

Just think it is perhaps getting commoner :-)

    I always thought
The french = La/Le and From French or Of French = de/des ...

So I thought the clue was missing "the"...

In a clue in one of the recent NJ grids, "The french" had to be solved as "de" and I thought that was incorrect too..

  19. Wow Suresh! I've never see you this agitated in response to any CW before!! :) Well, here's hoping to a better tomorrow then! Cheers! :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. @ Prasanna 9:59 - I agree wholeheartedly at a technical level, as I'm sure CV and other longtime setters will too. I just think it's a "lesser" evil compared to some of the other grossly malformed stuff out there! haha :)

    @ Suresh ...
Disastrous crossword today. Terrible clues. Best forgotten.

I second this. only top left quadrant is fine. others are so so...enter afresh - re enter what a clue??? OMG - Manna joins hands with the other favourite setter i believe...

    Mathu.

  22. Suresh (954), LOL. I've never seen you use such harsh word - not even to describe NJ's puzzles.

  23. This, I think is far worse than anything NJ has dished out. The entire bottom left corner as pointed out by Deepak is senseless unless all of us are getting the answers wrong.

The rest is also nothing worth talking about. Does not even provoke a discussion like NJ's crosswords with all their way out references

  24. Deepak,

"Want to make a clue for WHATCHAMACALLIT? Go over to Shuchi's Crossword Unclued and give it a try."

I did see that yesterday and was thrilled to see your excellent cluing.

I think Kishore is by now quite obsessed with this word or has taken a fascination for it -- call what you will!

  25. Late to the party, but I'll repeat what I said at the orkut forum. Not a single clue to like today.

This puzzle heavily underlines the need for a crossword editor more than ever.

Re-enter is such a bewildering clue that if it does appear as the right answer tomorrow, I don't know what to say.

Manna always had a sinusoidal mix of clues, but seems like he was stuck at the troughs today.

  27. 6 D is CD or an anagram without angram indicator?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would place that as an &-lit...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it's one of those rare dual-purpose clues... wildly serves as the anagrind .. and the word is the same as the defn.

  31. We have heard Diesel Engine. It is only here 15 A engine = diesel; or am I missing something?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Subramaniam, I had the exact same doubt. Would like to hear more on this.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You are missing something Subramaniam. Diesel by itself means 'an internal combustion engine in which heat produced by the compression of air in the cylinder is used to ignite the fuel' Source OED
