    I think it is {SYCE}{E}
    SYCE - groom
    E - oriental
    SYCEE - currency used in china (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sycee)

    This is like some academics seeing beauties in Shakespeare plays which the bard himself may not have intended!

  5. @Anon,
    You have not got it right
    Many also-ran get nearer (6)
    Many = C
    also-ran = LOSER
    get = connector
    nearer = Definition = {C}{LOSER}

  7. 23 - Trap captures New Delhi’s foremost robber (6) - BA{ND}IT?

    If someone argues that New Delhi's foremost cannot give ND and that we can derive only D from Delhi's foremost, there is no prob.

    The anno can be rewritten as BA (N D)IT, saying new = gives N.

  9. 'Growth of born mumbai leader'
    @Anon,
    These are cryptic crosswords

    Growth = Definition
    of = connector
    born = NEE
    Mumbai leader = M

    Growth = Plant = {NEE}{M}

    T
