  1. Deepak,
    I didn't solve this crossword but re:
    5 - Put in, put down, put on airs (10) - {INTER}{POSES}
    I suggest it is INTER/POSED

  2. For 'blend', Chambers gives an archaic meaning 'to blind; to dazzle'. It's listed as a verb, though.

  3. INTERPOSES as well as INTERPORED fit as per the crossings, both seem suitable to me definition wise
    Put in = INTERPOSES = INTERPOSED

  4. Don't you think for INTERPOSES, it must be 'puts in'?

  5. 12 - Keep cash-book (8)

    Keep also means castle or preserve (that is a fully guarded area). Here I think the wordplay is P(penny,cash)-RESERVE(book, v.)
    We can speculate who wrote this clue.

  6. Okay I see it now with regards to Interposes/interposed.
    As regards keep-preserve there was no doubt, it was the cash-book part which I didn't get. The way you put it with penny seems logical but I would not like to speculate who wrote it!!!

  7. A few questions:

    In 17A, how does 'running water' = 'exe'?

    Also, although I am now familiar with the 'Jack' = 'ab' and 'Bill' = 'ac', how does the substitution work? Is it 'ac' as in 'account', which can be substituted for 'bill'?

    And where do the 's' and 'e' come from in 'ashes'? I filled it using the crossings, but had only the 'has' and anagram indicator initially.

    Lastly, confused as to how 11A is undoubtedly plural, whereas the clue indicates a singular noun - a printing error, perhaps?

  8. @Aash

    running water = river = EXE (name of a river which is popular with CW setters)

    14 - With Jack and Bill together, one can count on them (5) - {AB}{AC}{I}

    Jack = AB
    Bill = account = AC
    One = I
    count on them = Definition = {AB}{AC}{I}

    22 - The quarter has untidy burnt remains (5) - A{S}H{E}S*

    Quarter = SE (South East)
    has = has
    untidy = Anagram indicator
    burnt remains = Definition

    Grammatical arrears abound here.
