  1. 8 - Beasts, free, grinned, we hear — regular losses there! (8)

    There is a printing error there. I think the clue must read

    8 - Beasts, free, ginned, we hear — regular losses there! (8)

    in which case if regular losses (are) there, then we get REINDEER by taking away every other letter starting from f in "free, ginned, we hear"
    ginned - trapped, snared with a gin, net

  2. Hello Col, Welcome change indeed, though not very typical Gridman IMO...not as many CDs as his puzzles normally have.

    1A: is a dd. I looked up the dictionary - "democrat" is also a horse-drawn wagon.

    10A: I had parsed this as BIKIN{-g}{+I}, your anno fits well too.

    12A: {-gall}IVAN{-ting}

    7D: LO (see) IT ERR (go wrong) about E (end of phase)

    23D: SA{-nd}TRAP

  4. Thanks Chaturvasi,

    I did look at the alternate letters in 8D but the R foxed me.

    Thanks Shuchi,

    Being a golfer it was stupid of me to have missed out the anno of 23D

    I missed out on Gallivant because of its pronunciation !!
